Silver and its history: what is 925 silver or sterling silver, why it is recycled, and how it changes over time
Silver has been worn on the human body for more than 5,000 years. The earliest known artifacts date back to 3000 BC in Mesopotamia, where the Sumerians shaped it into earrings, necklaces, and rings. In ancient Egypt it was rarer and more valuable than gold — reserved for pharaohs and priests, found in tombs as a symbol of protection in the afterlife. The Greeks associated it with Artemis, goddess of the moon, and turned it into the material of amulets and talismans. The Romans scaled it massively: by the 2nd century AD, an estimated 10,000 tons of silver were circulating in their economy. In pre-Columbian America, the treasure of Moctezuma included a ceremonial silver costume representing the moon.
In the 13th century, England formalized the standard we know today as 925 silver. Since then, this metal has passed through coins, mirrors, medical instruments, electronic components, and X-ray plates. It has changed form many times. That capacity to transform without losing its essence is, perhaps, what makes it so fitting for jewelry.
What is 925 silver?
Pure silver, known as 1000 silver, is too soft to be used in durable jewelry. It bends easily and cannot hold complex structures. That is why 925 silver exists, also known as sterling silver: an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. That proportion gives it strength without stripping away its essential properties. The 925 hallmark is the international guarantee that the silver content is verifiable and consistent.
Why don’t we use pure silver?
Because its softness does not allow for durable structures. A piece of pure silver would bend with daily wear, lose its shape, and could not hold stones or elaborate details. The alloy in 925 silver provides the firmness needed for a piece of jewelry to live on the body — and also allows for the natural oxidation process that gives it character over time.
Where does recycled silver come from?
Silver is present in more places than we imagine. In electronic components, industrial processes, lithographic materials, and medical X-ray plates. When these materials are discarded without proper treatment, the silver they contain is lost — and in some cases causes contamination. When processed correctly, that silver can be recovered at full purity.
X-rays, in particular, contain silver salts in their photosensitive layer. Through chemical and enzymatic processes, 925 sterling silver is extracted — the same standard as conventional mining, without any of its environmental costs. It is silver that already existed, that had already traveled a path, and that now continues on another.
Is recycled silver lower quality?
No. Silver is one of the few materials that can be melted and reused indefinitely without losing any of its physical or chemical properties. Its quality depends on its composition — 92.5% purity — not its origin. A piece of recycled 925 silver is, in material terms, exactly the same as a piece of 925 silver extracted from the earth.
Why do we work with recycled silver?
Because transforming makes more sense than extracting again.

A single improperly discarded X-ray can contaminate up to 1,000 liters of water. Recovering the silver it contains is not just an aesthetic choice — it is a decision with measurable consequences. And it is the only way we have worked since 2017.
Why does silver darken?
Silver reacts with hydrogen sulfide present in the air, with sweat from the skin, with environmental humidity, and with sulfur compounds found in some perfumes and creams. This chemical reaction produces silver sulfide (Ag₂S) — the grey or black layer that appears on the surface. It is oxidation, and it is completely normal in any piece of 925 silver.
Some environments accelerate the process: high humidity, pool chlorine, sea salt, frequent contact with cosmetics. Others slow it down: regular wear against the skin, for example, tends to keep silver active because the body’s natural oils create a protective layer over the surface.
Is oxidation a bad thing?
No. It is a surface reaction — the metal underneath remains intact. The silver sulfide layer can be reversed with a jewelry cloth, simple home methods, or a professional cleaning service. It is not deterioration: it is the material responding to its environment, as it always has.
Some prefer bright silver and clean it regularly. Others let oxidation build up in the reliefs of a piece, emphasizing its details and giving it a more aged appearance. Neither approach is wrong. It is, also, a way of making the piece your own.
Does silver lose value over time?
No. Silver is a precious metal whose price fluctuates in international markets like any commodity — the same as gold or platinum. That fluctuation depends on global economic factors, not the condition of the piece.
Beyond market price, a well-cared-for piece can last generations. It can be restored, transformed, inherited. And its value is not only in the metal: it is in what it carries. Transforming instead of extracting
Conventional silver mining carries concrete environmental costs. The process requires large amounts of water to transport and process the ore. It uses cyanide and mercury in extraction — chemicals that contaminate soil and water sources when not handled correctly. It generates deforestation, soil erosion, and toxic waste. The carbon emissions from mined silver are approximately three times those of recycled silver, according to life cycle assessments.
In Latin America, the history of silver mining also includes the history of mercury: it is estimated that colonial extraction in the Andes released more than 196,000 tonnes of mercury into the environment — contamination that scientific research identifies as still bioactive in parts of the region today.
Recycling silver does not undo those past impacts, but it avoids them entirely in every kilo recovered. Using recycled silver saves approximately 95% of the energy required by conventional mining and avoids around 51 kg of CO₂ per kilo produced. It is a difference that accumulates.
A note on care
Silver appreciates simple attention. Avoiding frequent contact with perfumes, creams, and chemicals extends its shine. Storing it separately, in a dry place with limited air exposure, slows oxidation down.
